President-elect Donald Trump promises to make America great again.

By Ashley Onzuka, Staff Writer

Dear President-elect Donald J. Trump,

Congratulations to you, your family, and your team on winning the election. We wish you nothing but the best during your presidential term and your drive to make America great again. Before you take your place as our 45th President of the United States, there are a few things we would like to discuss with you first.

We would like to start off by saying that we are writing to you as human beings; the same human beings we were yesterday and the same human beings we will be tomorrow. We will not change who we love or what we believe, nor hide where we are from.

The dark pigment of his skin and the light pigment of her skin are equally beautiful and no more superior than the other. The love and bond between a man and a woman is just as valued as the love and bond between a man and a man. The religious strength in a Muslim woman has the same religious strength in a Christian man. We are all human beings and all deserve to be treated exactly as that.

During the next four years of your presidential term, please hear our voices and remember that we are all still here. We are all still a part of this nation; the nation you feel is no longer great. Our question to you is, what will make America great again?

How can America be great again when the government wants to put a stop to pro-choice for Planned Parenthood? Women are losing the right to their own bodies while you stand there and tell me America will be great again. How does taunting our Hispanics with fear of deportation or blaming Muslims for every terrorist attack make America great again? How can America be great again when Senator Jeff Sessions, the man you appointed as the new attorney general, is the same man who was denied a federal judge position for using racist remarks? During his early career, Sessions was quoted saying that he felt the KKK was “okay, until he learned that they smoked marijuana.” Is that the great America you envisioned for our future? Or for your future, the future for the people just like you.

Yes, you are the next president of the United States. Please remember that being president is only one of the titles that has fallen into your lap. Being president is not just about the politics; it is about the people. All people. All human beings. We deeply apologize that we have failed to be a privileged white males in your great America. But we promise you, we are trying our hardest to live and love happily in our America.

Before you decide to make any changes on your path to making America great again, think of us. Remember us.

Remember the man who will be thrown in the dirt for loving another man, for loving another human being. Remember the woman in a hijab who lives in our religious-freedom country but is shunned away for freely expressing her religion. Remember the young Hispanic boy who will come home crying from school because the other kids built walls around him. Remember the little girl who will grow up in these next four years thinking that boys can say and do whatever they want to her. Remember the pregnant woman who knows she is unable to care for that baby but has no other choice. Remember the babies who were thrown in the foster system because the mother was unable to care for them. Remember all of us.

I do want America great again, but I want it great again for everyone, for all genders, for all races, for all religions, for all human beings. President Donald Trump, you will be the voice of our country for the next four years of our lives. Your role in this society will be vital, not as a politician, but as a role model.

Best of luck to you during your presidential term. We hope that you will guide us to a great America we can all live in.

Sincerely yours,

Human Beings
